With more than 3,700 hotels in 74 countries and 15 brands, Marriott International already had something for almost every type of trip.
However, one area where Marriott was a little weak was in Africa, with a handful of good African Pride-branded properties, but not the broadest of coverage.
This has now been rectified with its acquisition of the 116-hotel Protea Hospitality Group back in April 2014. This purchase has allowed Marriott to became the largest hotel company in Africa, and has nearly doubled its presence in its Middle East and Africa region to more than 160 hotels and 23,000 rooms.
The Protea portfolio consists of over 10,000 rooms in seven African countries including South Africa. The company now manages, franchises and leases hotels across the Protea Hotels brand, comprising a full and diverse range of hotels and resorts (103 hotels); the lifestyle boutique Protea Hotel Fire & Ice! (2 hotels); and the superior deluxe African Pride Hotels collection (11 hotels). In addition to its industry-leading 79 hotels in South Africa, Marriott’s Protea portfolio also has 37 hotels in Malawi, Namibia, Nigeria, Tanzania, Uganda and Zambia.
As of February 23rd, Marriott Rewards members can earn and redeem points at 26 Protea Hotels properties in the most popular South African destinations of Johannesburg, Cape Town and Durban. The remainder of the properties will join Marriott Rewards in late 2015.
However, all the properties are now available to paying customers. As an introductory offer, there is a 10% discount off the best available rate at all Protea Hotels for Marriott Rewards members.
I really like the look of the Protea Hotel Fire & Ice Cape Town property – a great location and at good prices too. Will definitely add it to the list of possible hotels when I’m in South Africa next time.
