The rise of carry-on flight food as options for those travelling from Heathrow T5

In recent times two well-known British brands have both launched options for those flying in economy but wishing to eat well whilst on their flights. First to launch back in late-2014 was Gordon Ramsay's Plane Food, with their range of onboard picnics: When you're travelling, you may be strapped for time and in a rush to catch your flight, but that doesn't mean you should have to miss out on enjoying a tasty meal. Pick up a Plane Food Picnic as you pass through Heathrow Airport's Terminal 5, and you'll be able to...

BA extra £100 off holidays

Receive an extra £100 off British Airways holidays in the New Year sale – book by 12th January 2016

The BA New Year sale is not a bad promotion, with some good savings across the board - both on standalone flights (in all classes) and on holidays (which BA defines as a bundle of flights and hotel, car hire or both). The sale runs through until 2nd February 2016, with trips needing to be taken by a variety of dates later in 2016 (the Ts & Cs are quite complex and vary by offering and destination). BA don't like to make this stuff easy! However, news has reached me that BA is...

British Airways makes boarding with an Apple Watch easier

Having seen use of their Apple watch app quadruple in just four months, British Airways has announced that it will introduce new scanners to make life easier for its passengers. Instead of having to slide their wrists under fixed desk-top scanners, instead customers will be able to show their Watch-based boarding pass to the new ‘Scan and Go’ devices, print their own bag tags and speed through the airport. 136 of the new scanners are being installed at check in desks across Heathrow’s Terminal 3 and 5, and will be ready for use on December...

BA 'Gourmet Dining' menu

Testing BA’s new pre-order menu service

Pre-ordering menu selections isn’t new of course, It has been available in business and first class on many airlines for a number of years.  However, BA have taken this a step further and have begun to offer a small but varied selection of special pre-order menus in economy (World Traveller) class. This new initiative was launched in April, and is currently on trial on a limited number of transatlantic routes.  Fortunately, this included the LHR-PHL service that I’ve taken as the outward leg on this week’s trip to Portland. The option to...

Qhotels Arrived

QHotels adds former De Vere hotels to its portfolio

QHotels has never quite made it onto my list of my 'go-to' hotel brands, primarily as its coverage of the UK was somewhat sparse, and where hotels were available close to my desired destination, they tend to be a little way out of town. That said, they tend to be attractive premises in the main, with good levels of customer service, and competitive pricing.  As time goes on, they appear to be increasingly focusing on the leisure and spa market, and I think that their quality and appeal has strengthened...

Marriott | Protea

Protea Hotels joins Marriott Rewards

With more than 3,700 hotels in 74 countries and 15 brands, Marriott International already had something for almost every type of trip. However, one area where Marriott was a little weak was in Africa, with a handful of good African Pride-branded properties, but not the broadest of coverage. This has now been rectified with its acquisition of the 116-hotel Protea Hospitality Group back in April 2014. This purchase has allowed Marriott to became the largest hotel company in Africa, and has nearly doubled its presence in its Middle East and Africa region...

Avis New Year Sale

Avis chops 20% off car hire rates in New Year Sale

I'm always on the look-out for deals on car hire, as it can often be a significant chunk of my overall trip cost when travelling on business. I tend to try both Hertz and Avis on most occasions due to having status in their loyalty programs, but will often check other services should they be more convenient location-wise. Last resort is to look at including the car hire in with flight or hotel bookings (e.g. with BA Holidays), but this tends to write-off any points or status with the car...
