I’m always on the look out for good-looking and exceptionally made laptop bags. There’s so many out there that are of questionable design, lacking essential features or just absent any substance and style whatsoever. So when my eye catches a sweet looking case on the tube or in the check in queue, I tend to try to make a note of the brand so I can research it later.
That’s true of Knomo Bags, a small independent manufacturer based in London. I first caught sight of one of their cases in the BA lounge at Heathrow and struck up a conversation with the owner as a result. That lead me to investigate further, and I’ve been left massively impressed by the quality of their designs, and the care they clearly take in terms of selecting materials and colour combinations.
Knomo Bags were founded in 2004 by two friends (Howard Harrison and Benoit Ruscoe) who recognised the gap in the market for stylish accessories with laptop protection built-in. Starting with just 6 designs (3 men’s and 3 women’s bags) and sold exclusively from Selfridges in Oxford Street, they’ve grown steadily over the 10 years since to have a comprehensive range of bags, cases, backpacks and sleeves. In 2007, Charlie Clifford (founder of luggage brand Tumi) joined the brand and launched Knomo in the USA. They now sell online, from a number of department stores and from their own HQ in Great Portland Street.
One of my favourite designs they offer, and one of their most recent, is the Stanford small leather brief, ideal for the Macbook Pro 13″ (and quite possibly the new model being announced next week!). Available in black or brown leather, this refined, stylish briefcase is ideal for professional and relaxed use.
Crafted from full grain leather with a canvas back and comfortable leather handles, it has an RFID-signal blocker lining, shoulder strap and padded laptop section.
Both colours feature contrasting lining, with the brown bag offering a turquoise interior, whilst the black case is paired with a delightful shade of yellow.
The Stanford costs $249 or £199 and there is free shipping across the contiguous United States or UK mainland.
